Broadband Stimulus
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009
Internet connectivity has permeated our daily lives and has become a necessary tool to increasing the social and economic benefits of the American lifestyle. Although the U.S. is ranked highly for broadband penetration, the trickle down effect of the IP infrastructure has not always delivered many positive contributions where governments, consumers and business put the Internet to good use.
To spur the proliferation of broadband capabilities, President Obama and the U.S. Congress have passed a forward thinking initiative to help bring jobs, services and products to all of the American people by expanding access to broadband services using the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Nokia Siemens Networks is the world’s leading enabler of fixed and mobile network solutions. We are committed to helping North American service providers expand and secure long-term growth.
"Finally, we will rebuild and retrofit America to meet the demands of the 21st century ... And it means expanding broadband access to millions of Americans, so business can compete on a level-playing field, wherever they're located."
- President Barak Obama January 24, 2009
Internet for All - Closing the Broadband Gap across America
The Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress realize that a gap indeed exists in this country in the available connectivity offered to all citizens in large part because of location and socio-economic conditions. Together they passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in a broad effort to stimulate the national economy. A key component of the ARRA aims to further the development of broadband connectivity in rural and underserved areas. The ARRA allocates $7.2 billion in funds in the way of grants, loans and loan guarantees through programs managed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) in the Department of Commerce and the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) in the Department of Agriculture.
